Iowa in Eighth, McClear Seventh at Johnnie-O

SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The University of Iowa men’s golf team is in eighth place after two rounds at the Johnnie-O at Sea Island. Senior Mac McClear is tied for seventh place heading into the final round of play at the Seaside Course.

McClear shot 69 (-1) to start the day, notching a pair of birdies on the course front nine (33) and dropping just one stroke through 18 holes for Iowa’s low round so far at the event.

He finished even par (70) in the second round, securing top-10 positioning at seven strokes out from the lead going into Tuesday’s final round.

McClear’s six birdies on the day mark a Hawkeye-best. McClear’s 4.25 (-3) stroke average on par fives also matches the second-best in the field.

Freshman Hogan Hansen is next for Iowa, currently tied for 24th after posting a three-over par effort through 36 holes. The rookie is three strokes back from top-10 standing.

Senior Ronan Kleu and sophomore Ian Meyer are tied for 35th at 145 (+5).

The Hawkeyes are 12 strokes back from the lead at 571 (+11) through two rounds. No. 37 Ohio State leads a pack of 13 teams competing at the Seaside Course, including six ranked foes; Iowa leads No. 50 Michigan State.

  • Iowa averaged 4.15 (+18) on par fours, which ranks second in the field. The Hawkeyes shot 3.08 (+3) on par threes, tying for fourth in that category; Iowa’s 127 pars tie for the third-most at the Johnnie-O.
