No. 1 Hawkeyes Shutout Central Michigan

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The top-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team shutout Central Michigan, 8-0, on Friday afternoon at Grant Field.

Iowa’s defense allowed no shots in its fourth shutout this season. The win moves the Hawkeyes record to 5-0 overall.

“Our whole goal today was to come out fast and upgrade every quarter, so I think we did a really good job at that through at least the first three quarters.” said head coach Lisa Cellucci, “It’s tough to stay discipline, but we challenged them every quarter with a little something different, and they stuck to the plan.”

Freshman Dionne van Aalsum’s started off scoring with back-to-back-to-back goals in the first sixteen minutes of the game. The Castricum, Netherlands found the back of the goal 13:02 minutes into the game following with another goal 20 seconds later assisted by fifth-year Sofie Stribos.

Van Aalsum’s started off the second quarter with her third goal of the game assisted by fifth-year Esme Gibson.

Freshman Miranda Jackson extended the Hawkeye lead 22:28 into the game, unassisted. Two minutes later, freshman duo Tess Reed and Gia Whalen teamed up for Reed’s first career goal.

Van Aalsum’s tallied her fourth goal of the game, and 12th of the season in the 31st minute, assisted by Gibson. Two minutes later Stribos scored off of Gibson’s third assist.

Jackson closed out the scoring with her second goal of the game in the 57th minute of play.

OF NOTE…
– Iowa’s defense has only allowed 31 shots (10 on goal) this season.
– Sophomore Mia Magnotta has only allowed two goals this season.
– van Aalsum’s has had multiple goals in every game this season.
– Seven of Iowa’s eight goals were scored by freshmen.
– Last hat trick was in 2019 by Maddy Murphy vs. Indiana.
– Last four game goal was in 2016 by Kim Scraper vs. Brown.
