SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – Senior center Jared Reiner scored on a tip-in basket with four seconds remaining to lift Iowa’s men’s basketball team to a 100-99 overtime win over the Sydney Kings. The contest was the first for Iowa on its current five-game exhibition tour.
Senior Brody Boyd hit a three-point basket to pull Iowa into a 95-95 tie with 30 seconds remaining. Boyd connected on another trey with 20 seconds remaining to give Iowa a 98-97 advantage. The Sydney Kings took a 99-98 advantage on two free throws with 12 seconds to play before Reiner scored the game-winning basket.
Sophomore Jeff Horner led Iowa’s scoring with 24 points, and he added nine rebounds, five assists and five steals. Sophomore Pierre Pierce added 19 points and senior Glen Worley added 16 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Senior Sean Sonderleiter added 11 points while Reiner and Boyd each scored nine. Reiner added eight rebounds.
Iowa shot 46.2% from the field, including 40.9% (9-22) from three-point range, but converted just 19-33 (57.6%) free throws. The Hawkeyes won the rebounding battle by a 50-47 margin.
Former Iowa player Steve Carfino, who played professional basketball for the Sydney Kings for a number of years and is now a sports broadcaster in Australia, was presented an Iowa jersey prior to the contest by Iowa Coach Steve Alford.
Iowa’s next game will be played tomorrow against the Wollongong Hawks.
