IOWA CITY, IA – University of Iowa Head Wrestling Coach Jim Zalesky picked up his 100th career victory Thursday night as Iowa defeated Northern Iowa, 27-10, in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa improves to 5-1 on the season with the win, while Northern Iowa drops to 1-2.
Hawkeye senior Cliff Moore started things off with a 15-4 major decision over Northern Iowa’s second-ranked Dylan Long at 141. Moore bounced back after last Sunday’s loss at Iowa State, recording all six takedowns in the match. Iowa sophomores Ty Eustice and Joe Johnston followed with a decision and major decision at 149 and 157, respectively. Eustice recorded a 5-2 win over Panther Jon Garvin at 149. Johnston recorded all nine takedowns in the match in his 19-9 win over Panther Nick Baima, including five takedowns in the third period.
Northern Iowa’s Hesston Johnson put the Panthers on the board at 165 with a 7-3 win over Iowa sophomore Cole Pape. Hawkeye senior Tyler Nixt regained control at 174 with his 6-3 decision over Eric Hauan. It was the fifth-straight time that Nixt beat Hauan in his career, and the second time this season. Nixt improves to 16-0 on the season with the win. Iowa sophomore Paul Bradley fought through injury to defeat Northern Iowa’s Eric Pedretti, 12-4. The match was halted several times due to Bradley bleeding, and he received stitches matside during one the timeouts. Hawkeye senior Ryan Fulsaas won by forfeit at 197 pounds, before Panther Michael Shedek defeated Iowa redshirt freshman Ryan Fuller, 4-2 in sudden victory, at heavyweight. At 125, Hawkeye senior Luke Eustice rode Northern Iowa’s Chris Helgeson the entire third period and scored late nearfall points to win the match, 10-5. Eustice remains undefeated at 8-0 with the win. Northern Iowa put the last points on the board with Patrick Garcia’s 14-3 major decision over Hawkeye junior Trent Goodale at 133.
Iowa’s next competition will be at the Midlands Championships, Dec. 29-30 in Evanston, IL.
