Hawkeyes Defeated by Minnesota

IOWA CITY, IA – The Iowa men’s tennis team lost its second dual of the season in a 5-2 loss to Minnesota Sunday afternoon at the Recreation Building.

The Hawkeyes fell behind 1-0 after losing two of three doubles contests. Iowa’s win came in the No. 3 match where freshmen Jonny Hoak and Ryan Reid recorded a victory over Chris Wettengel and Andres Osorio (2-2, ret.).

Hoak and Reid carried their momentum into singles competition. Hoak recorded Iowa’s first point of the day with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Osorio in the No. 3 match. The win marked Hoak’s first career dual victory. Reid also recorded his first career dual victory with a 6-4, 3-6, (11-9) win over Sion Wilkins in the No. 6 match. In the No. 4 match, freshman Walter Valarezo recorded a 7-6 first-set victory over Brian Lipinski, but dropped the remaining sets (7-5, 6-1). In the No. 1 match, sophomore Chaitu Malempati fell to Aleksey Zharinov (6-4, 6-2). Freshman Sebastian Delgado fell to Avery Ticer in the No. 2 match (7-6, 6-3). Sophomore Aaron Schaechterle lost his No. 5 match to Dusan Tabak (6-3, 6-4).

“We are a very young team,” said Iowa Head Coach Steve Houghton. “We competed well against on of the top teams in the country. We just have to continue to learn and improve.”

Iowa (0-2, 0-1) will travel to Kalamazoo, MI, next Sunday to face Western Michigan in its first road dual of the season. Competition is scheduled to begin at noon (CT).
