MADISON, WI – The University of Iowa wrestling team defeated Wisconsin, 24-9, Friday night in Madison, WI. The Hawkeyes won seven weight classes, including three by major decision. Iowa improves to 10-3, 5-1 in the Big Ten, while Wisconsin falls to 16-5, 3-3 in the conference.
Hawkeye senior Cliff Moore started the meet with his ninth consecutive win, scoring a 15-5 major decision over Tyler Laudon at 141 pounds. Moore improves to 22-2 overall and 12-1 in dual competition. Iowa sophomore Ty Eustice followed up with a 10-2 major decision over Tony Turner at 149. Wisconsin’s Tyler Turner put the Badgers on the board with his 3-2 win over Joe Johnston at 157 in the tiebreak period. Hawkeye redshirt freshman Cole Pape recorded his first major decision in dual competition with a 12-4 win over Kelly Flaherty at 165. Iowa senior Tyler Nixt scored a 6-1 decision over Ralph DeNisco at 174, improving to 26-1 overall and 12-1 in dual competition. Wisconsin struck again at 184 with Brady Reinke scoring a 6-4 decision over Paul Bradley in sudden victory. Iowa scored decisions at the next three weights, starting with senior Ryan Fulsaas’ 13-6 win over Ryan Flaherty at 197. Redshirt freshman Ryan Fuller followed up with a 4-1 victory over Jareck Horton at heavyweight. Iowa senior Luke Eustice came from behind to defeat Tom Clum, 7-5 in sudden victory at 125. Eustice trailed 5-3 in the third period, but recorded a takedown in the last minute of regulation to force the match to sudden victory. He then scored a takedown with three seconds left in sudden victory for the win. Eustice has won his last eight matches, improving to 19-1 overall and 11-0 in dual competition.
Iowa will complete its Big Ten road trip Sunday at Minnesota. The match is set for 2 p.m. in Williams Arena, and will be televised live on Fox Sports Net. The Golden Gophers are 9-6 overall, 3-3 in the Big Ten. It will be the 1,000 dual in Iowa school history.
