IOWA CITY, IA – The Iowa men’s tennis team recorded its first dual win of the season with a 5-2 victory over DePaul Sunday afternoon at the Recreation Building.
The Hawkeyes fell behind early after losing two of three doubles contests. Iowa’s win came in the No. 1 match where freshman Sebastian Delgado and sophomore Parker Ross cruised to an 8-3 victory over Sam Davidson and Mark Henderson.
Iowa fought back in singles competition winning five of six matches. Freshman Walter Valarezo recorded Iowa’s first point of the day with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Eric Huffman. In the No. 1 match, sophomore Chaitu Malempati recorded his first career victory at Iowa’s top position with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Henderson. The Hawkeyes’ third point of the day came in the No. 2 match where Delgado recorded his first collegiate dual victory with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Robert Kotroczo. In the No. 3 match, Ross clinched Iowa’s victory with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win over George Wang. Sophomore Aaron Schaechterle collected his first collegiate dual win and Iowa’s fifth point of the day with a 6-1, 3-6, (10-7) victory over Radek Guzik.
“This was a very good win for us,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “This win is a good reflection of the progress this young team has made.”
Iowa (1-3, 0-1) will return to action Saturday when its hosts Marquette. Competition is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Recreation Building.
