Feb. 21, 2004

IOWA CITY, IA – The Iowa men’s tennis team posted its second consecutive victory Saturday afternoon with an impressive 6-1 win over Marquette at the Recreation Building. The Hawkeyes went a combined 8-of-9 in singles and doubles competition.

Iowa shuffled its doubles lineup and it worked to perfection as the Hawkeyes won all three matches to claim their first doubles point of the season. In the No. 1 match, freshman Sebastian Delgado and sophomore Parker Ross improved to 2-0 on the season with an 8-3 victory over Eigis Vedrickas and Hugo Leenders. In the No. 3 match, freshmen Jonny Hoak and sophomore Aaron Schaechterle downed Ian Kawas and Ricky Servoss, 8-4. Sophomore Chaitu Malempati and freshman Walter Valarezo completed the sweep with a 9-8 win over Troy Delmege and Creighton Macy.

The Hawkeyes carried their momentum into singles competition. In the No. 2 match, Delgado defeated Vedrickas without losing a game in the 6-0, 6-0 victory. Hoak claimed Iowa’s third point in the No. 4 match with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Macy. For the second consecutive week Ross claimed meet point defeating Delmege, 6-4, 6-2. In the No. 4 match, Valarezo downed Kawas in three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1. He improved his dual record to a team-best 3-2. In the No. 5 match, Schaechterle recorded his second straight victory with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Servoss.

“This was a good win for us,” said Iowa Head Coach Steve Houghton. “It was great to get the doubles victory. I think our team is continuing to show improvement match-by-match.”

Iowa (2-3, 0-1) will return to action tomorrow when it hosts Indiana State. The Sycamores lost a 6-1 dual to Wisconsin earlier today. Competition is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Recreation Building.
