Hawkeyes Down Indiana State

IOWA CITY, IA – The Iowa men’s tennis team continued its winning ways Sunday afternoon with a 5-2 victory over Indiana State at the Recreation Building. The win marked the Hawkeyes’s third consecutive victory and improved their record to 3-3.

For the second straight dual Iowa won all three matches to claim the doubles point. In the No. 3 match freshman Jonny Hoak and sophomore Aaron Schaechterle cruised to an 8-2 victory over Boyd Michau and Andrey Kumantsov. The Hawkeyes clinched the point in the No. 2 match where sophomore Chaitu Malempati and freshman Walter Valarezo recorded an 8-4 victory over R.J. Nagel and Dewald Linde. Iowa swept doubles competition in the No. 1 match where freshman Sebastian Delgado and sophomore Parker Ross posted an 8-5 victory over Ivan D’Argence Arceo and Aaron Phillips.

Indiana State rallied in singles competition tying the score at 1-1 with a win in the No. 5 match. The Hawkeyes made the score 2-1 after Hoak posted a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 win over Boyd Michau in the No. 3 match. The Sycamores once again tied the score with a win in the No. 1 match. Iowa then gained control. In the No. 2 match, Delgado won for the third consecutive time with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory over D’Argence Arceo. In the No. 3 match, Ross sealed the win with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Nagel. It marked the third consecutive time that Ross has claimed meet point. Iowa claimed its fifth point of the day in the No. 6 match where Schaechterle posted his third straight win in a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Linde.

“This win capped off a great weekend for us,” said Iowa Head Coach Steve Houghton. “It was good to get a win over a very good Indiana State team.”

Iowa (3-3, 0-1) will return to action Thursday when it travels to Des Moines for an intrastate dual against Drake. Competition is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Drake Tennis Center.
