Hawkeyes Fall to Drake

Feb. 26, 2004

DES MOINES, IA – The Iowa men’s tennis team faced a tough road contest in a 7-0 loss to instate rival Drake Thursday evening at the Drake Tennis Center. The loss snapped Iowa’s three-meet winning streak.

The Hawkeyes fell behind early after losing all three doubles contests. In the No. 1 match, freshman Sebastian Delgado and sophomore Parker Ross were defeated by Anthony Perkins and Matt McClure, 8-5. Sophomore Chaitu Malempati and freshman Walter Valarezo also lost an 8-5 battle in their No. 2 match with Felipe Montenegro and Sergi Vila. In the No. 3 match, freshman Jonny Hoak and sophomore Aaron Schaechterle were defeated by Jack Frankowicz and Jonathan Tishler, 8-0.

Iowa was unable to gain momentum in singles competition. The Hawkeyes’ closest match came at the No. 1 position where Malempati lost a 7-6 tiebreak in the first set to Montenegro and dropped the second set, 6-4. After losing the first set, 6-1, Hoak fought back in the No. 3 match against McClure. His effort for a third set came a tiebreak short as he lost the second set, 7-6(7). Ross lost a tough first set to Frankowicz in the No. 3 match, 7-5, and was defeated in the second set, 6-1. In the No. 2 match, Delgado lost 6-1, 6-0 to Perkins. Valarezo lost his No. 5 match to Vila, 6-0, 6-2. In the No. 6 match, Schaechterle was defeated by Tishler, 6-1, 6-1.

“We are a very young and injured team right now,” said Iowa Head Coach Steve Houghton. “That certainly showed in our performance tonight.”

Iowa (3-4, 0-1) will return to action Saturday, March 6 when it hosts top-ranked Illinois. Competition is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. at the Recreation Building.
