Hawkeyes Swept by No. 52 Michigan State

EAST LANSING, MI – The Iowa men’s tennis team faced tough competition Saturday afternoon in a 7-0 loss to 52nd-ranked Michigan State at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The loss is Iowa’s fourth in conference play.

The Hawkeyes fell behind early after losing all three doubles contests. In the No.1 match, freshman Sebastian Delgado and sophomore Chaitu Malempati lost an 8-4 decision to Andrew Formanczyk and Chris Mitchell. Freshmen Jonny Hoak and Walter Valarezo were defeated by Cameron Marshall and Eric Simonton in the No. 2 match, 8-6. Senior Matis Jasicek and sophomore Aaron Schaechterle lost their No. 3 match to Mike Brown and Michael Flowers, 8-4.

Iowa was unable to gain any ground in singles competition, losing all six matches. The Hawkeyes’ closest match of the day came at the No. 3 position where Valarezo was edged by Chris Mitchell, 7-5, 7-5. In his first match at the No. 1 position, Delgado was downed by Formanczyk, 6-3, 6-4. Malempati lost to Marshall in the No. 2 match, 6-1, 6-2. In the No. 4 match, Hoak fell to Simonton, 6-1, 6-4. Schaechterle lost his No. 5 match to Joseph McWilliams in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. In the No. 6 match, Jasicek rallied from a 6-2 first-set loss to Brown to send the second set into a tiebreak. His effort came up short in the 7-6 (5) loss.

The Hawkeyes (3-10, 0-4) will return to action tomorrow when they face 48th-ranked Michigan. Competition is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. (CT) at the Wolverines’ Varsity Tennis Complex.
