IOWA CITY, IA – The Iowa men’s tennis team dropped its sixth conference match of the season in a 5-2 loss to 42nd-ranked Northwestern Friday afternoon at the Klotz Tennis Courts.
Iowa got off to a slow start in doubles competition, losing all three matches to fall behind 1-0. In the No. 3 match, sophomore Aaron Schaechterle and senior Matis Jasicek held and early 4-1 lead over Tommy Hanus and Willy Lock. The duo then dropped the final seven games in the 8-4 loss. In the No. 1 match, freshman Sebastian Delgado and sophomore Chaitu Malempati lost an 8-3 decision to Chuck Perrin and Justin Hoeveler. The No. 2 match proved to be a fierce battle as freshmen Walter Valarezo and Jonny Hoak were edged by Adam Schaechterle and Matt Christian, 9-7.
The Hawkeyes showed improvement in singles competition, but were only able to claim two of six matches. Iowa’s biggest victory came in the No. 1 match where Delgado dominated Hanus, 6-4, 6-2, in only his third match as Iowa’s top singles player. He now leads Iowa with five dual victories and two conference wins. The Hawkeyes’ other win came in the No. 6 match between Jasicek and Hoeveler. Jasicek claimed the first set, 6-4. After falling behind in the second set, 4-1, Jasicek rallied and went on to defeat Hoeveler in a 7-6 (5) tiebreak.
In other singles action, Malempati lost his No. 2 match to Perrin, 6-3, 6-3. Valarezo was defeated by Lock in the No. 3 match, 6-1, 6-2. Hoak lost a 7-5, 6-2 decision to Adam Schaechterle in the No. 4 match. Aaron Schaechterle was defeated by Ahmed Wahla in the No. 5 match, 6-3, 6-1.
“We played better today, but seven surgeries and two stress fractures over the course of the season have made this a difficult year,” said Iowa Head Coach Steve Houghton.
The Hawkeyes (3-12, 0-6) will return to action tomorrow when they face Wisconsin. Competition is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the Klotz Tennis Courts. In the event of inclement weather, the match will be moved indoors to the Recreation Building.
