Hawkeyes Fall to No. 56 Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, IN – The Iowa men’s tennis team faced another tough ranked conference opponent in a 7-0 loss to No. 56 Indiana Sunday afternoon at the IU Outdoor Tennis Courts.

The Hawkeyes fell behind early after losing all three matches in doubles competition. Iowa’s closest match of the day came at No. 2 singles where sophomore Aaron Schaechterle and senior Matis Jasicek lost a hard-fought battle to Neil Kenner and Ryan McCarthy in a 9-8(6) tiebreak. Freshman Sebastian Delgado and sophomore Chaitu Malempati lost their No. 1 match to Ryan Recht and John Stone, 8-4. In the No. 3 match, freshmen Walter Valarezo and Jonny Hoak were defeated by Jakub Praibis and Dmytro Ishtuganov, 8-3.

Iowa was unable to gain any momentum in singles competition, losing all six matches in straight sets. In the No. 1 match, Delgado lost a 6-4, 6-3 decision to 60th-ranked Praibis. Malempati fell to Recht in the No. 2 match, 6-4, 6-3. In the No. 3 match, Valarezo was downed by Neil Kenner, 6-2, 6-4. In the No. 4 match, Hoak was defeated by Tom Bagnato, 6-4, 6-3. Schaechterle lost his No. 5 match to David Bubenicek, 6-4, 6-1. In the No. 6 match, Jasicek lost to Ishtuganov.

The Hawkeyes (3-14, 0-8) will return home to host Ohio State on Friday. Competition is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Klotz Tennis Courts. In the event of inclement weather, the match will be moved indoors to the Recreation Building.
