IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa wrestling team opened the 2004-05 dual season with a 29-10 victory over Arizona State Saturday night in Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes recorded their 775th dual win in school history with the victory, improving to 1-0 on the season. Arizona State fell to 0-1 with the loss.
It was the Carver-Hawkeye Arena debut for seven Hawkeyes, and Iowa went 8-2 overall on the evening. Hawkeye freshman Luke Lofthouse started things off at 174 pounds, recording an 8-5 win over Arizona State’s Rick Renzi. Hawkeye junior Paul Bradley scored a late escape in regulation and a takedown in sudden victory at 184 to defeat C.B. Dollaway, 9-7 in sudden victory. Arizona State tied the team score at 6-6 with Ryan Bader’s 2:23 pin over Hawkeye freshman Dane Pape at 197. Hawkeye freshman Matt Fields won a 4-3 decision over Cain Velasquez at heavyweight to retake the team lead (9-6). Arizona State took a 10-9 team lead with Jeremy Mendoza’s 14-0 major decision over Hawkeye sophomore Lucas Magnani at 125, but it would be the last team points the Sun Devils would score. Iowa rolled through the remaining five matches, starting with junior Mario Galanakis’s 1:29 pin over Sun Devil Adam Hickey at 141. Freshman Alex Tsirtsis scored a 10-2 major decision over Chris Frieje at 141, before junior Ty Eustice scored a 6-3 decision over Patrick Williams at 149. Iowa junior Joe Johnston followed with an 8-5 win over Brian Stith at 157, and redshirt freshman Mark Perry sealed the team win with a 14-3 major decision over Patrick Pitsch at 165. It was the first Carver-Hawkeye appearances for Magnani (125), Galanakis (133), Tsirtsis (141), Perry (165), Lofthouse (174), Pape (197) and Fields (Hwt.). All seven were also wrestling in the Iowa lineup for the first time in a dual meet.
Iowa (1-0) will host intra-state rival Iowa State (5-0) Sunday, December 5 at 6 p.m. in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The event is part of the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series, and is one of three Iowa-Iowa State events in the series that will be held next week.
