FRESNO, CA – The Hawkeye wrestling team opened the first meet of their two-dual day with a 30-7 win over Fresno State at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, CA, this afternoon. Iowa improved to 4-1 with the win, while Fresno State fell to 2-4-1. A crowd of 6,863, which is the second-highest dual meet attendance figure in Fresno State wrestling history, attended the dual.
The Hawkeyes scored team bonus points in three matches, including a pin by freshman Alex Tsirtsis (141), a technical fall by junior Ty Eustice (149) and a major decision by redshirt freshman Mark Perry (165). Winning decisions for Iowa were juniors Mario Galanakis (133), Joe Johnston (157) and Paul Bradley (184), and freshmen Charlie Falck (125) and Matt Fields (Hwt.). Fields scored his second sudden victory win of the weekend, defeating Fresno State’s Clint Walbeck, 3-1 in the first sudden victory period. Bradley improved to 10-0 in collegiate competition this season, while Eustice is 14-1 and Perry is 12-1. Tsirtsis and Fields improved to 13-3, while Johnston is 12-3.
The Hawkeyes will end the day with a 9 p.m. (CT) dual against Cal Davis in Davis, CA.
