Mogard Named StarHawk

Mogard Named StarHawk

March 10, 2005

Mike Mogard, a sophomore outfielder on the UI baseball team from Marshalltown, Iowa, has been added to the McLeodUSA StarHawks team.

Mogard took a red-shirt year in 2003, but played in 32 games last season, starting 14. He saw action in the outfield and as a designated hitter; all ten hits were singles.

“When you think of a student-athlete, Mike Mogard is the perfect role model,” said UI Head Coach Jack Dahm. “There is not a player in our program who works harder on and off the field than Mike.”

“Mike earned the off-season strength and conditioning award this past year, which is presented to the athlete who has shown the most dedication and determination in the weight room.

Mike shows the same dedication and determination in the classroom and on the diamond. That kind of behavior sets an example for others to follow.”

Mogard is an academic all-Big Ten student majoring in pre-dentistry. He also represents his team on the Iowa Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, a group of student-athletes from each of the UI’s varsity sports programs who help to shape departmental policies and procedures and to initiate department-wide outreach programs.

“Mike earned the off-season strength and conditioning award this past year, which is presented to the athlete who has shown the most dedication and determination in the weight room,” Dahm said. “Mike shows the same dedication and determination in the classroom and on the diamond. That kind of behavior sets an example for others to follow.”

The StarHawks program is an initiative funded in part by McLeodUSA, a leading telecommunications company with corporate headquarters in Cedar Rapids and a long-time member of the UI’s Partners in Excellence corporate sponsorship program. The StarHawks team is a collection of student-athletes at the University of Iowa who truly represent the very best the intercollegiate athletics program at the UI has to offer. StarHawks typically excel athletically and academically, and also are active in community or leadership activities.
