The Hawkeyes picked up their offense today against the University of North Carolina, but the end result still was not what they were hoping for. Iowa went 0-2 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge after a 1-0 Tar Heel victory.

Iowa was on the attack from the start of the game. The Hawkeyes dribbled the ball down into the Tar Heel zone within seconds and immediately had a scoring opportunity on a corner shot. Senior Debbie Birrell slammed a shot towards the goal, but North Carolina’s Katy Tran was there for the save. Both teams played aggressive defense for the next several minutes until the Tar Heels’ Rachel Dawson broke the stalemate with a goal off a pass from Ashley Judge. Iowa countered with an attack of their own just two minutes later when Kara Zappone had a look at the goal, but Tran again ruined the moment. The Hawkeyes third and final shot on goal came in the second half by freshman Caitlin McCurdy.

North Carolina had six shots on goal and scored just one against freshman goalkeeper Lissa Munley. The Tar Heels also led the Hawkeyes in two other statistical categories – UNC took 13 shots total compared to just five by the Hawkeyes and also had eight corner shots to Iowa’s four.

The Hawkeyes (0-2) travel to California next week to compete against Stanford, University of California-Berkeley, and Pacific. Iowa’s next home game will be September 9 against Ball State at 3 p.m. followed by a noon game on September 11 against Providence.
