The University of Iowa field hockey team lost in a conference match-up today against Michigan. The No. 11 Wolverines took out the tenth-ranked Hawkeyes 2-1. The loss gives Iowa an even 3-3 conference record and a season mark of 10-6.

The Hawkeyes scored first about 15 minutes into the game. Kadi Sickel slammed a shot at Michigan’s net, but was stopped by goalie Beth Riley. The ball rebounded out to the left side and Caitlin McCurdy took advantage of the ball position and scored to put Iowa up 1-0. Just before the half, senior Lori Hillman found Lucia Belassi with a long pass for a goal to knot the game at one goal apiece.

Erin Dallas scored the game-winning goal for Michigan five minutes into the second half and the score held to the end. The Wolverines held Iowa to one shot and just two corner shots after the break, while taking eight shots and six corners of their own.

Iowa took 11 shots in the game, with McCurdy, Sickel and Debbie Birrell getting off two shots each. Michigan had 14 shots by only four players. Lissa Munley gave up two goals and had eight saves in the loss.

Iowa stays in Ann Arbor to face 16th-ranked Louisville tomorrow afternoon. The Hawkeyes return home to host the 2005 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament next week Nov. 4-6.
