Minneapolis, MN – The University of Iowa wrestling team was defeated by the top-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers on Sunday, 25-9. Iowa is now 7-4 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten.
Iowa jumped out to an early 3-0 lead when Lucas Magnani (125) defeated Travis Lang, 9-5. The Hawkeyes struggled after the first match, dropping the next five bouts. Daniel Dennis (133) was defeated by Mack Reiter, 10-2 and Alex Tsirtsis (141) dropped a 4-3 decision to Manuel Rivera.
No. 2 ranked Dustin Schlatter upset top-ranked Ty Eustice (149), 4-1 and C.P. Schlatter followed with a 12-7 win over Joe Johnston (157) to give the Golden Gophers a 13-3 match advantage. Matt Nagel earned an 8-3 decision over Erick Luedke (165) and Minnesota led, 16-3 heading into the final four matches.
The Hawkeyes battled back, winning two of the final four bouts. Mark Perry (174) defeated Gabriel Dretsch to bring the match score to 16-6. Paul Bradley (184) was then upset by Roger Kish but Dan Erekson (197) followed with a 6-3 win over Mitch Kuhlman. Matt Fields (Hwt.) had to default against top-ranked Cole-Konrad due to injury to end the match.
The Hawkeyes will continue Big Ten action on Friday, January 27 when they host Purdue at 7 p.m.
