CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team defeated Wisconsin today, 6-1, at Coe College in Cedar Rapids. Iowa improves to 5-0 in Big Ten play, and 13-3 overall.
Iowa claimed the doubles point, playing indoors. At the number one doubles position, Meg Racette and Jacqueline Lee were the first to finish, defeating Kaylan Caiati and Nicole Beck, 8-0. Hillary Mintz and Kayla Berry were the second duo to finish, and defeated Morgan Tuttle, and Chelsea Nusslock, 8-2, at the number two doubles position. Mili Veselinovic and Krissy Dowlin were the final duo to finish their doubles match, defeating Erin Jobe and Elizabeth Carpenter, 8-7 (8-6) at the number three doubles spot.
“I was impressed with the team and how we played in our doubles matches. We played as well as we could have to start and you can’t ask for more than that,” said Iowa Head Coach Daryl Greenan.
After doubles competition, weather conditions had improved enough for the singles competition to be moved to the outdoor courts at Clark Racquet Center.
“We struggled a bit coming outside, but we played hard. The players had to be patient with the elements and worked hard for one point at a time,” said Greenan.
Mintz was the first Iowa player to finish singles competition, defeating Nusslock, 6-0, 6-1 at the number two singles spot. Lee finished next, at the number four singles position, defeating Carpenter, 6-1, 6-2. Lee is now 15-1 this spring, and improved her win streak to 14 with the victory. Merel Beelen finished third for Iowa in singles play, at the number six singles spot, defeating Jobe, 6-1, 6-1. Beelen clinched the win for Iowa with the victory, and is on a three-match winning streak against Big Ten opponents.
Berry finished next for the Hawkeyes, and was defeated by former Iowa player, Morgan Tuttle, 6-0, 6-0, at the number five singles position. Veselinovic defeated Beck, 6-1, 6-4, at the number three singles spot.
Big Ten Player of the Week, Racette, currently ranked 33rd, was the last to finish singles competition, and defeated Caiati at the number one singles position, 1-6, 6-0, 6-3.
“It feels great to be 5-0 in the conference. Tomorrow is a big match for us. It is our toughest scheduled match of the year, as well as our biggest test. I look forward to it,” said Greenan.
Iowa will continue competition tomorrow, at the West Campus Tennis-Recreation Center on the University of Iowa Campus. Competition will begin at 11 a.m.
