The University of Iowa baseball team was defeated by the Northern Iowa Panthers, 6-5, Tuesday in Cedar Falls. Iowa falls to 23-29 on the year, while UNI evens its record at 26-26. It was Iowa’s second loss at the hands of the Panthers this season.

The Panthers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first, then added a second run in the bottom of the second.

Iowa came storming back in the top of the fifth, when the Hawkeyes posted five runs. Jason White brought home the first run of the inning with an RBI fielder’s choice, then Skyler Moss and Dusty Napoleon drew bases-loaded walks to take the lead at 3-2. Kevin Hoef drew the third-consecutive walk to push another run across, followed by an RBI single off the bat of Nate Price.

Northern Iowa wouldn’t go away, and cut the lead to 5-3 with a run in the bottom of the inning. UNI took the lead with a trio of two-out runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Panthers scored on a wild pitch and a two-run single by Brandon Douglas.

Iowa was unable to push the tying run across the plate in the final three innings, and took the loss.

Mark Bennett earned the win for the Panthers, who used nine pitchers on the evening. Iowa’s Austin Seward took the loss in relief.

The Hawkeyes return to action this weekend with a four-game series against Michigan. Friday’s game is set for 5:35 p.m. (CT).
