CHAPEL HILL, NC – In the final minute of play, North Carolina freshman Danielle Forword scored an unassisted goal that handed the University of Iowa Field Hockey team a 2-1 loss Sunday at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in Chapel Hill, NC.
With the score tied 1-1 and the game seemingly headed for overtime, Forword took the ball along the baseline, looked off a defender and put the game-winning shot past Hawkeye goalkeeper Lissa Munley.
The No. 12 Hawkeyes fall to 0-2 on they year, while No. 5 North Carolina ups its record to 2-0. Second-ranked Wake Forest defeated No. 8 Michigan today, 3-0, giving the ACC it’s fourth-consecutive sweep of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
The Tarheels took an early, 1-0 lead when Karen Mann scored her second goal of the weekend on a pass from Forword just under ten minutes into the game.
The two teams played neck-and-neck the rest of the way, until Hawkeye forward Caitlin McCurdy tied things up with a goal on a penalty corner with just 7:08 on the clock. Junior Kadi Sickel and senior Heather Schnepf assisted on the goal.
The game remained tied until Forword scored the game winner at the 69:45 mark.
Iowa returns home next weekend to host Kent State (Friday, 3 p.m.) and Duke (Sunday, 1 p.m.).
