IOWA CITY — Coach Steve Alford’s University of Iowa men’s basketball team opened and closed its exhibition season Friday in Carver-Hawkeye Arena with a 77-58 victory over Buena Vista.

On the positive side of the ledger, newcomer Justin Johnson scored a game-high 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field and four free throws. The freshman guard also showed nice range by knocking down four of six attempts behind the three-point line.

Adam Haluska added 15 points and Seth Gorney 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawkeyes, who played without Mike Henderson and Tyler Smith.

The Hawkeyes also shot a respectable 42 percent from the field and were credited with 18 assists.

However, Iowa was also charged with 18 turnovers, shot just 68 percent from the charity stripe and busted out at 40-all in the rebound battle with the Beavers.

“We have some things to work on” said Alford after his team’s only public exhibition game.

The Hawkeyes had this game in the “W” column for most of the evening – although it goe interesting in the final stanza. Iowa raced to a 16-8 lead when Gorney slammed a dunk off a nice feed from Haluska at the 12:47 mark of the first half. The lead stretched to 30-15 on Johnson’s three-pointer with just more than seven minutes to play.

BV’s Brian Fogleman trimmed Iowa’s lead to five at 50-45 on a layup at the 11:52 mark. The Hawkeye then went on an 11-5 run that closed the door on the visitors.

Travis Person scored 14 ponits and Andre Wagner 13 to lead the scoring for the visiting team.

Iowa opens its regular season Monday against The Citadel. In honor of Veterans Day 2006, all military personnel, retired, active and inactive, are invited to attend free of charge.
