Dec. 14, 2006

IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa women’s soccer team recently announced its team awards for the 2006 season. Sophomore Kelsey Shaw was named both the Most Valuable Player and the Most Valuable Offensive Player.

Shaw scored two goals and recorded one assist during the 2006 season after moving to a more offensive-minded role in the midfield. She started all 19 matches for the Hawkeyes.

Junior Claire Goldenberg was named the team’s most Valuable Defensive Player. Goldenberg started all 19 matches and anchored a Hawkeye defense that allowed a school record low of 22 goals. She was also named to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week after recording the game-winning goal in overtime to upset No. 21 Indiana.

Freshman Heather Windsor was named the team’s Most Improved Player. Windsor, a midfielder from Temecula, CA, did not see any action during the 2006 season, but showed steady improvement during training throughout the entire fall.

In addition, eight Hawkeyes were named academic all-Big Ten, which was the most of any fall sports at Iowa. Those athletes include Lindsey Boldt, Kelsie Full, Abby Gierke, Claire Goldenberg, Jackie Kaeding, Melisa Kaetterhenry, Katie Mulvahill and Katie Smeltzer.

The Hawkeyes finished the 2006 season with a 6-11-2 record, which equaled the most amount of wins for the Hawkeye soccer program since 2002.
