Iowa Successful In Tuscaloosa

TUSCALOOSA, AL – Iowa defeated No. 50 Alabama today, 4-3. Iowa claimed four singles wins in the match. Iowa improves to 3-3 on the season.

In doubles play, Iowa’s duo of Kayla Berry and Merel Beelen, playing at the third position, were the first to finish, falling to Shelley Godwin and Bianca Svensson, 8-4. Hillary Mintz and Kelcie Klockenga, at the number one position, finished second, losing to Mari Muller and Sofi Ayala, 8-4, while Jacqueline Lee and Mili Veselinovic were the last duo to finish, falling in a tiebreaking set to Nicole Briceno and Paulina Bigos, 8-7 (4).

In singles action, Klockenga was the first to finish for Iowa, and lost at the number four spot to Briceno, 6-3, 6-0 to bring the score to 2-0, Alabama. Lee finished next for Iowa, defeating Muller, 6-4, 6-1.

Mintz then defeated Ayala, 6-3, 6-2 at the third position, to tie the match at 2-2. Veselinovic brought Iowa ahead with her win over Godwin, 6-1, 6-4, but Berry’s loss to Alice Tunaru (6-4, 3-6, 6-2), tied the score again at 3-3. Beelen clinched the victory for Iowa in a win over Andrea Brenes in three sets, 3-6, 7-5, 3-6 to improve her dual record to 6-0.

Iowa will have next weekend off and will return to competition February 23rd, facing DePaul in Iowa City before traveling to Notre Dame, February 25th.
