University of Iowa senior basketball player Adam Haluska has been namedthe Academic All-American of the Year on the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Division I men’s basketball team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A native of Carroll, IA, Haluska earned first team academic all-America honors after earning third team all-America honors as a junior. Haluska is the first men’s basketball player at Iowa to earn first team honors and the first to be named the Academic All-American of the Year. He is a finance and marketing major with a 3.5 grade point average.
Earlier this year Haluska was the recipient of the 2006-07 Anson Mount Scholar/Athlete Award, earning a $5,000 donation to the University of Iowa general scholarship fund. The award is presented by Playboy Magazine and recognizes a student-athlete who excels in the classroom and on the court.
Haluska is also one of 10 finalists for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award and he is one of 30 remaining candidates for the Naismith Award.
“This is a great honor for a very deserving individual,” said Iowa Basketball Coach Steve Alford. “Adam has been an outstanding leader for our basketball team this season. He has worked extremely hard throughout his career, both on the basketball floor and in the classroom. He is a great ambassador for our program and the University of Iowa.”
“We’re proud of everything Adam does on the court and in the classroom,” said Gary Barta, Iowa’s director of athletics. “He is a true leader and a great ambassador for the Hawkeyes.”
Haluska has started every Iowa game over the past three seasons and all 126 games in his college career. He has scored 1,797 career points, including 1,513 while at Iowa to rank 11th in career scoring. He leads the Big Ten Conference in scoring and ranks 19th nationally in both scoring and free throw percentage . He ranks among conference leaders in free throw percentage (second), three-point field goals per game (second), minutes per game (fourth) and steals (eighth).
He has twice been named Big Ten Player of the Week this season and was named by The Sporting News as the national Player of the Week after leading Iowa to key wins over Michigan and Indiana. He was named to the pre-season all-Big Ten first team.
Haluska has earned the Chris Street Award in each of the past two seasons and earned academic all-Big Ten recognition as a sophomore and junior. As a junior he earned third team all-Big Ten honors and was selected to the NABC District 12 all-District second team. He was honorable mention all-Big Ten as a sophomore.
