SAN DIEGO, CA – 52nd-ranked Iowa fell to San Diego State today, 4-3. Iowa falls to 5-5 on the season, including 1-0 in Big Ten play.
In doubles play, Iowa’s duo of Kayla Berry and Kelcie Klockenga were the first to finish, and fell to Esther Cadua and Milana Yusupov at the third position, 8-4. Playing at the first doubles spot, Jacqueline Lee and Mili Veselinovic were also defeated, 8-5, by Alesya Vidov and Eliska Krausova, earning San Diego State the doubles point. Hillary Mintz and Merel Beelen were the last duo to finish doubles play, falling to Holly Bagshaw and Sisse Nielsen, 8-6.
In singles action, Lee, playing at the first doubles spot, defeated Bagshaw, 6-0, 6-1, to bring the match even at 1-1. Veselinovic finished second, at the number two doubles spot, defeating Krausova, 6-4, 6-1, bringing the Hawkeyes ahead, 2-1. Berry, playing at the fourth position, fell to Cadua, 6-1, 6-4, to bring the match back to even.
Mintz finished next for the Hawkeyes, and was defeated by Vidov at the third spot in a tiebreaking match (1-6, 6-1, 6-1). Nielsen played a tough match against Beelen, but the Hawkeye proved too much, winning a tiebreaking match, 6-3, 1-6, 6-0, to bring the match total even at 3-3. Klockenga’s match at the fifth singles spot was the last to finish and was also a tiebreaking match. Yusupov clinched the win for San Diego State, defeating Klockenga, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5.
The Hawkeyes will play at Long Beach State, Thursday at 4 p.m. (CST).
