THIS WEEK The Iowa women’s tennis team will host Michigan State, Sunday at 11 a.m. Competition will be held at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex and admission is free of charge.
THE HAWKEYES Iowa is currently ranked 59th in the FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings with a 7-8 record, including 3-2 in the Big Ten. Competing for the Hawkeyes will be Jennifer Barnes, Merel Beelen, Kayla Berry, Kelcie Klockenga, Jacqueline Lee, Hillary Mintz and Mili Veselinovic.
THIS SEASON Sophomore Merel Beelen is 13-2 and has won 18 of her last 20 matches. Mili Veselinovic has won 12 of her last 17 singles matches. Iowa’s doubles team of Berry and Klockenga is 7-6 this season.
THE COMPETITION Michigan State is currently unranked with an 11-6 record, including 1-3 in Big Ten play. Iowa faced Michigan State at home last season, and won, 6-1. The Hawkeyes have a 22-12 all-time record against the Spartans.
LAST COMPETITION Iowa traveled to Penn State and Michigan last week. The Hawkeyes defeated the Nittany Lions, 5-2, before falling to the Wolverines, 6-1. Beelen won both singles matches last week. Lee, Veselinovic, and Mintz went 1-1 on the weekend.
HEAD COACH Daryl Greenan Coach Greenan is in his third season as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Greenan led the Hawkeyes to an 18-6 overall record in 2006, going 9-1 in Big Ten competition for a second place league finish. Greenan has a 32-16 overall record in two seasons at Iowa. Toni Neykova is the assistant coach and is in her fifth season with the Hawkeyes.
