IOWA CITY, IA – The 59th-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes defeated Illinois today, 6-1. Iowa improves to 10-9 overall including 6-3 in Big Ten competition.
In doubles play, Iowa won the point with two doubles wins. Mili Veselinovic and Jacqueline Lee defeated Emily Wang and Megan Fudge at the number one spot, 8-5, while Kayla Berry and Kelcie Klockenga beat Kristina Minor and Momei Qu at the third position, 8-5. Hillary Mintz and Merel Beelen were defeated at the number two doubles position by Shivani Dave and Alejandra Meza Cuadra, 8-6.
In singles play, Iowa dominated from the start. Finishing first for the Hawkeyes was Mintz, playing at the third singles spot. Mintz defeated Dave, 6-1, 6-0. Soon after, Beelen finished a convincing performance against Meza Cuadra, winning at the fifth spot, 6-2, 6-0. Beelen improves her singles record to 16-3, and has won 21 of her last 24 matches.
Next to finish was the number six singles match, which Iowa claimed as well. Klockenga beat Wang, 6-4, 6-4, and clinched the victory for Iowa with the win. Iowa’s only singles loss of the day came at the number four position, with Berry falling to Minor in a tough fought match, 7-5, 7-5.
Veselinovic was the next to finish, defeating Qu in a tiebreaking set, 6-7, 6-1, 1-0 (11-9), and Lee’s singles match was the last to finish, also going into a tiebreaker. Lee beat Fudge at the number one spot, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.
“I am very impressed with the way we played today,” said Iowa Head Coach Daryl Greenan. “Illinois is a good team and they challenged us, but our girls played some of their best tennis this season to seal the victory.”
Iowa will face Purdue tomorrow at 11 a.m. Competition will be held at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex and admission is free of charge.
