MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Fourth-seeded Iowa defeated fifth-seed Ohio State in the first round of Big Ten Championship play today, 4-2.
In doubles play, Iowa’s Merel Beelen and Hillary Mintz were defeated by Caitlin O’Keefe and Sonia Ruzimovsky, 8-3, while Angela DiPastina and Christina Keesey beat Kayla Berry and Kelcie Klockenga, 8-6. Ohio State claimed the doubles point, and the match between Jacqueline Lee and Mili Veselinovic and Julie Blackmore and Ally Mueller was unfinished.
In singles action, Mintz was the first to finish for Iowa, defeating Keesey at the third spot, 6-0, 6-1, bringing the match total to 1-1. Veselinovic finished next at the number two spot, beating Blackmore 6-1, 6-3. O’Keefe brought the match total back to 2-2 with her win over Berry at the fifth singles spot, 6-4, 6-4.
Lee brought the total ahead for Iowa, defeating Mueller at the first singles position, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Beelen clinched the victory for Iowa, overcoming Ruzimovsky in a tiebreaking match, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, at the number four singles spot. The match between Klockenga and Julie Voss was unfinished.
Iowa will face first-seeded Northwestern tomorrow at 10 a.m. in Minneapolis.
