Schwab, Zadick Compete At World Championships

BAKU, AZERBAIJAN – University of Iowa wrestling staff members Doug Schwab and Mike Zadick have completed competition at the 2007 World Freestyle Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Schwab, who was competing at 66 kg (145.5 lbs), won his first two matches before falling to past World bronze medalist Geandy Garzon of Cuba in the quarterfinals (2-0, 4-1). In the first round Schwab defeated Australia’s Gentian Balashi (4-0, 7-0) and in the second round he beat Puerto Rico’s Pedro Soto Cordero (1-0, 1-0) before losing to Garzon. Schwab bounced back to claim a 3-2, 1-0 win over Mongolia’s Buyanjav Batzorig in the first consolation match, but dropped a 4-1, 1-0 decision to Otar Tushishvili of Georgia in the bronze medal match.

Zadick, who was competing at 60 kg (132 lbs.), lost a first round decision to Sait Prizreni of Albania, 1-1, 1-0. Zadick was eliminated from the tournament when Prizreni lost his semifinal match.

Schwab, Zadick and the Hawkeyes will open the 2007-08 college wrestling season November 10 at the Harold Nichols Open in Ames.
