Hawkeyes Travel To WILSON/ITA Midwest Regional Championships

THIS WEEK —The Iowa women’s tennis team travels to Ann Arbor, MI to compete in the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships. Qualifying competition will begin Thursday. Main draw action continues Friday through Wednesday, Oct. 24 at the University of Michigan tennis facilities.

LAST WEEK–The Hawkeyes competed in the Hoosier Classic hosted by the University of Indiana. Jacqueline Lee and Alexis Dorr were named the Hoosier Classic doubles champions after finishing the tournament with a 4-0 record in doubles play. Merel Beelen and Milica Veselinovic were finalists in doubles competition, finishing play with a 3-1 record. Kayla Berry and Lynne Poggensee-Wei fought back from early round loses and were the consolation finalists, finishing the doubles tournament with a 3-2 record. Kelcie Klockenga led the Hawkeyes in the singles competition, finishing second in her flight and posting a 2-1 record. Veselinovic placed fourth in her flight, finishing with a 1-2 record.

LAST SEASON–The Hawkeyes ended the 2007 spring season with a 7-3 Big Ten Record, earning the fourth seed in the Big Ten Championship. The Hawkeyes ended the season ranked 51st with an overall record of 12-10. Iowa defeated Ohio State (4-2) in the first round of the Big Ten Championships before falling to Northwestern (4-1) in the semifinals.

HEAD COACH DARYL GREENAN–Coach Daryl Greenan is in his fourth season as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Greenan led the Hawkeyes to a 12-10 overall record in 2007, going 7-3 in Big Ten competition for a fourth place league finish. Greenan was named 2006 Big Ten Coach of the Year. Greenan has a 44-26 overall record in three seasons at Iowa. Toni Neykova is the assistant coach and is in her sixth season with the Hawkeyes. She is a former member of the Hawkeye tennis team (1999-2002).

SPRING SEASON–The Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships will be the Hawkeyes final competition this fall and they will return to action in January. The Hawkeyes will begin their spring season at home, January 25-27, hosting the Hawkeye Invitational.
