ANN ARBOR, MI –
The Iowa Women’s tennis team ended their second day of play today at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships, hosted by the University of Michigan. The Hawkeyes posted a 6-2 doubles record for the day, in addition to sophomore Kelcie Klockenga claiming her third straight win in qualifying singles play, which advances her into tomorrow’s 64-player main draw.
Klockenga defeated Anna Dzeva of Purdue, 6-4, 6-3, making her undefeated in qualifying singles play and one of eight individuals to qualify for tomorrow’s singles main draw. Klockenga will face seventh seed Lauren Lui of Northwestern when main draw competition begins tomorrow morning. Other Hawkeyes set to play in main draw competition tomorrow include 13th seed Jacqueline Lee, 15th seed Milica Veselinovic, Alexis Dorr, and Merel Beelen.
In doubles action, Iowa advanced two of its four doubles teams into tomorrow’s 16-team doubles main draw. Fourth seed Dorr and Lee defeated B. Murisic/S. Salkovic of DePaul 8-2 in first round play and continued their winning-streak by beating R. Rush/C. Ruiz (MAR) 9-8(3). Beelen and Veselinovic, seeded tenth, defeated B. Larson/M. Martzolf (MIA) 8-6 in the first round of competition and went on to defeat C. Hubbs/A. Mueller of Ohio State, 9-8(4), in second round play.
Klockenga and Jessica Young were defeated in their first match of the day by 11th seed G. Ganeva/K. Milinkovic of DePaul 8-5, but ended their appearance at the tournament victoriously by defeating C. Graetz/K. Minor of Illinois, 8-5, in consolation play. Kayla Berry and Lynne Poggensee-Wei defeated J. Buterbaugh/K. Donohue of Bradley, 8-5, in their first match but fell to J. Migan/J. Schickerling of Indiana State, 9-7, in the second round of competition.
Doubles main draw competition will continue tomorrow starting at 9:00 A.M. at the University of Michigan tennis facilities. Singles main draw competition will begin tomorrow, also with a 9:00 A.M. scheduled start time.
