Men's Basketball Add Fourth Recruit

Nov. 15, 2007

University of Iowa men’s basketball Coach Todd Lickliter announced the signing of junior college guard Jermain Davis to a national letter of intent to join the Hawkeye basketball program next fall.

Davis (6-4, 200) is a shooting guard who is in his first season at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, IA after attending Southeastern Community College in Burlington as a freshman. In one season at Southeastern Davis averaged 10.9 points while leading the team in assists and ranking third in steals.

“Jermain fits in very well with the high school seniors who are joining our program next year,” said Lickliter. “He played a key role in leading his team to a very successful season as a high school senior and we look forward to having him as part of our program in the years ahead.”

Davis attended Robbinsdale Cooper HS, where he helped his prep team post a 27-4 record as a senior. That team set a school record for wins in a season and finished second in the Class 4-A state tournament. Davis was named to the all-tournament team at the state tournament. He earned all-conference honors in the North Suburban Conference and shared conference MVP honors as a senior.

Davis averaged 15.3 points per game as a junior and senior and was named to the all-defensive team in the metro area. A solid defensive player, he also averaged four steals, five rebounds and 3.4 assists during his prep career. As a senior he shot 54% from the field, including 41% from three-point range.

“Jermain is a strong athlete and a good kid,” said Kirkwood Coach Doug Wagemester. “I find him extremely coachable. I think he has a chance to be a very good defender. “I think his strength is probably breaking people down off the dribble and getting into the paint.”

Lickliter and the Iowa staff signed three players on the initial day of the signing period. Those three high school seniors included Iowa City native Matt Gatens, Anthony Tucker from Minnetonka, MN and Andrew Brommer from Rosemount, MN.

Iowa’s 2007-08 roster of 11 players includes three seniors. Iowa (2-0) returns to action Sunday, hosting Florida Gulf Coast University at 1:05 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
