Hawkeyes Lead Midlands Team Race

EVANSTON, IL — The University of Iowa wrestling team is in first place with 50 points after Saturday’s first session of competition at the 45th annual Midlands Championships in Evanston, IL. The Hawkeyes advanced nine wrestlers to Saturday night’s quarterfinals. Defending team champion Iowa State is in second place with 44 points.

Senior Matt Fields (Hwt.), junior Charlie Falck (125) and sophomores Joe Slaton (133) and Jay Borschel (174) all remain undefeated on the season with first session wins. Falck and Slaton are the third seeds at their weight classes, while Fields is the fourth seed and Borschel is the sixth. Also advancing for Iowa were top seed Alex Tsirtsis (141), who is wrestling as an unattached Hawkeye, second seeds Brent Metcalf (149) and Mark Perry (165), fifth seeds Dan LeClere (141) and Ryan Morningstar (157) and unseeded Phillip Keddy (184). Perry pinned his two first session opponents to pick up his fourth and fifth consecutive wins by pin. Keddy upset sixth seed Doug Umbehauer of Rider, 3-1 in the first sudden victory period to advance in the championship bracket.
