IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team opened the spring season with a victory over Northern Illinois. The Hawkeyes won the dual meet by a score of 6-1 at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center.
In No. 1 singles competition, senior Bart van Monsjou defeated Brian Livingston, 6-4, 6-2. Fellow senior J.P. Ritchie also won, as he defeated Alex Friesen 6-2, 6-3. Juniors Christian Bierich and Gregory Holm also claimed victories on Saturday. Bierich won 6-2, 6-1 over Adam Ford and Gregory Holm defeated Diego Zegarra-Ballon 6-2, 6-3. In addition, sophomore Tommy McGeorge was victorious, as he defeated Javier Barnabe 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles competition, the Hawkeyes took two of three. Ritchie/van Monsjou defeated Livingston/Ford 8-3 and Haal/Dwyer defeated Monroy/Zegarra-Ballon 10-8. Iowa’s Holm/Grimes fell 8-3 to Northern Illinois’ Friesen/Chu.
Head Coach Steve Houghton was pleased with the results of the dual meet. “Today was a very good start to our season. I was particularly happy with how decisive our singles scores were.”
