Iowa Defeats Minnesota In Big Ten Opener

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — The Iowa Women’s tennis team opened its Big Ten season with a bang Sunday, defeating No. 54 Minnesota 6-1 at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, MN. Sunday’s victory ends Minnesota’s six match winning streak and brings the No. 41 Hawkeyes to 7-0 this season and 1-0 in the Big Ten.

Iowa earned the doubles point, going 2-1 in doubles competition and improving its overall dual meet doubles record to 18-3. At the number one position, Jacqueline Lee and Alexis Dorr suffered their first defeat of the season, falling 8-2 to Karina Chiarelli and Lindsay Risebrough. However, teammates Mili Veselinovic and Merel Beelen prevailed in a close match against Alessandra Ferrazzi and Elena Koprivica, earning a 9-8(4) win. Kayla Berry and Lynne Poggensee-Wei secured the doubles point for Iowa with an 8-6 victory over Danielle Mousseau and Alex Seaton.

In singles action, the Hawkeyes were 5-1 for the day. Lee, at Iowa’s number one position, defeated Ferrazzi 6-2, 1-6, 6-2, while Veselinovic extended her singles winning streak to 7-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Chiarelli. Beelen, back at the number three position this week, stayed tough in a close match against Risebrough and earned the singles point with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 victory. Dorr fell in her first singles loss of the season in an intense 6-4, 4-6, (1-0) (5) match against Koprivica. Kelcie Klockenga earned a solid 6-2, 6-2 victory over Mousseau to earn another singles point for Iowa and Poggensee-Wei concluded the singles line-up at the number six position by defeating Seaton 6-4, 6-7(4), 1-0(5).

Iowa travels to Ft. Collins, CO Friday to face Colorado State and will conclude with a trip to Denver, CO to face the Denver Pioneers on Sunday. Competition is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Miramont Lifestyle Fitness on Friday. Sunday’s match is set to begin at 1 p.m. at the Benjamin F. Stapelton Jr. Tennis Pavilion.
