BLOOMINGTON, IN – 43rd-ranked Iowa fell to 32nd-ranked Indiana Saturday, 4-3. Iowa moves to 10-2 on the season including 1-1 in conference play.
In doubles play, Iowa’s duo of Kayla Berry and Lynne Poggensee-Wei were the first to finish and fell to Indiana’s Lindsey Stuckey and Myriam Sopel at the third spot, 8-3. Mili Veselinovic and Merel Beelen, playing at the second doubles spot, were the second to finish and were defeated by Alba Berdala and Charlotte Martin of Indiana, 9-8.
Although Indiana claimed the doubles point, Iowa’s Jacqueline Lee and Alexis Dorr put up a fight at the number one doubles position. They defeated the Hoosiers’ Katya Zapadalova and Brianna Williams, 9-8, bringing their season record to 14-4.
Moving on to singles play Veselinovic quickly overpowered Zapadalova at the number two spot, 6-2, 6-2, bringing the match to a tie at 1-1. Veselinovic improves her season record to 14-4 with the win. Finishing shortly after Veselinovic was Lee with a solid win over Berdala at the first singles position, 6-1, 6-1 to put the Hawkeyes ahead of the Hoosiers 2-1. Poggensee-Wei was Iowa’s third player to finish singles competition, falling to Sopel, 6-1, 6-2 at the sixth singles spot. The match was again tied at two. Dorr then put Iowa back ahead, defeating Martin, 6-4, 6-2 at the third spot.
With Iowa ahead 3-2 there were two matches to be finished. Beelen and Stuckey fought it out at the fourth singles spot in a tie-breaking match. Stuckey won the match 6-2, 6-7, 6-1, and tied the overall score 3-3. The match point came down to the fifth singles position in a grueling contest between Klockenga and Williams. Klockenga won the first set 7-6 while Williams won the second set with the same score. Although Iowa put up a strong fight, Williams defeated Klockenga in the third set, 6-0, claiming the victory for Indiana.
The Hawkeyes will return to action Sunday at No. 31 Ohio State. Competition will begin at 10 a.m. (CST).
