UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – The University of Iowa women’s golf team completed its 2007-08 season Sunday, finishing tied for eighth place at the Big Ten Championships on the campus of Penn State University. Purdue won the championship by 19 strokes over second place Michigan State.
Junior Tyrette Metzendorf (295, +7) capped off her breakout season by finishing alone in third place in the individual standings. The Winter Haven, FL, native’s four-round score of 295 broke the Iowa record for lowest individual performance for 72 holes, previously held by former Hawkeye Stacey Bergman, who shot a 299 at the 1998 Big Ten Championships. Her fourth-round score of 71 (-1) was bested only by Purdue’s Maria Hernandez, who is ranked ninth nationally and shot a 69 (-3) Sunday.
Playing for the final time as a Hawkeye, senior Melanie Boyles (307, +19) tied for 26th place, the highest finish of her collegiate career at the Big Tens. Her four-round score of 307 also cracked Iowa’s list for lowest individual performance over 72 holes, putting her in a tie for seventh place all-time with Metzendorf (Spring 2006) and M.C. Mullen (Spring 1999).
Junior Becky Quinby (318, +30) finished tied for 47th place. Freshmen Laura Cilek (321, +33) and Brianna Coopman (323, +35), playing in their first Big Ten Championships, finished tied for 49th place and in 58th place, respectively. Senior Jill Marcum (325, +37) was also playing for the final time in her collegiate career and finished in 60th place.
As a team, Iowa’s total team score of 1,231 now ranks third on the all-time list for 72-hole team performances.
