IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa soccer team improved its record to 2-0-0 this season, defeating Western Illinois 1-0 at the UI Soccer Complex Friday night. Freshman forward Alyssa Cosnek scored another goal to lead the Hawkeyes.
Cosnek scored two of Iowa’s four goals last Saturday against Drake and added another one Friday. In the 51st minute, sophomore Keli McLaughlin took the ball quickly up the right sideline and played a perfect cross right into the path of the streaking Cosnek, who fired the ball past Western Illinois goalkeeper Jessica Walsh.
Though the Hawkeyes ended the match with 18 shots, Cosnek’s goal would be all the offense in this match. Head Coach Ron Rainey was again pleased with his team’s effort on offense, but noted that they needed to finish shots when the ball is in the opposing goal box.
“Some of the shots we put forth tonight were good enough to be goals,” Rainey said. “We’ve got to do a better job of finishing off plays on the offensive side of the ball. It was a match that could have easily gone the other way.”
The Hawkeyes nearly got on the board early in the 25th minute. Senior forward Stephanie Hyink dodged her way through the Western Illinois defense and put a shot right off of the crossbar. The ball spun backward, but Walsh was able to dive on the ball to prevent the goal. Later in the second half, freshman Morgan Showalter got the ball on a breakaway but her fourth shot of the match sailed high above the goal.
The Hawkeye defense was once again all over the field. Redshirt junior Jackie Kaeding, sophomores Mandy Heimann and Jenna Aleo, and freshman Rachel Blakesley were often into Western Illinois territory and only allowed the Westerwinds six total shots. The goalkeeping duties were split for the second-straight match, with sophomore Kali Feiereisel starting the match and making one save while earning her second straight shutout. Freshman Emily Moran entered for the second half and made two saves.
Iowa returns to action this Sunday, where they will close out a three-game homestand by hosting South Dakota State. The Hawkeyes won last year’s matchup 3-2 in Brookings, S.D. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
