Hawkeyes Travel To Mary Fossum

THIS WEEK — The Iowa women’s golf team travels to East Lansing, MI, to compete at the 54-hole Mary Fossum Invitational, Sept. 20-21.

THE COMPETITION — The 12 competing teams include: Iowa, Ferris State, Kent State, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Michigan State, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Northwestern, Notre Dame and Toledo.

LINEUP — The lineup for the Hawkeyes will include a range of veteran Hawkeye golfers to newcomers. Seniors Tyrette Metzendorf and Becky Quinby will be accompanied by junior Alison Cavanaugh, sophomore Laura Cilek, and freshman Chelsea Harris. Brianna Coopman will also travel and compete as an individual.

LAST COMPETITION — The Hawkeyes finished the 2008 spring season with an eighth place finish at the Big Ten Championships. The team fired a four-round total of 1,231, the third lowest 72-hole performance for Iowa. Metzendorf was Iowa’s top golfer, finishing third.

QUOTING HEAD COACH Kelly Crawford — “I’m optimistic about the Mary Fossum Tournament. We’ve had three weeks of practice and everyone is anxious to get started with the tournaments. We have a freshman and sophomore traveling for us this time. We’re looking to compete this weekend with Michigan State and Kent State, both are ranked. We’ve got some good scores coming from practice, but we are always looking to improve, as well.”

SEASON PREVIEW — This season the Hawkeyes are looking forward to having good leadership from their returning seniors, Tyrette Metzendorf and Becky Quinby. In addition to the six returning letterwinners from last season, the team welcomes two standout freshmen from Illinois, Chelsea Harris and Ann Vrdolyak.

NEXT COMPETITION — The Hawkeyes will travel to Colombia, MO, to compete at the Johnnie Imes Invitational Sept. 29-30.
