IOWA CITY, IA – – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team defeated Illinois State Friday, 7-0, at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. The 57th-ranked Hawkeyes move to 3-1 on the season with the victory.
“Illinois State is a better team than the score indicated,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “I was proud of our guys for how they finished off their matches.”
Iowa claimed the doubles point to begin the dual, taking two of three matches. The 60th-ranked duo of Tommy McGeorge and Will Vasos continued their stellar play at the No. 3 position. The pair defeated Michael Hobson and Micah LeMoine, 8-3. Christian Bierich and Nikita Zotov defeated Skip Span and Daniel Tobar at No. 1 doubles, 8-2, to clinch the doubles point for the Hawkeyes.
Iowa kept the momentum going into singles play, sweeping all six matches. Vasos defeated Tobar to get things started for the Hawkeyes. The freshman was victorious 6-0, 6-3, at the No. 4 position. Senior Greg Holm then defeated LeMoine 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 6 position. Zotov was victorious at the No. 2 position. The sophomore defeated Filip Miljevic 6-4, 6-2, to clinch the victory for Iowa. McGeorge defeated Hobson 6-4, 7-5, at No. 5 singles. Bierich and Reinoud Haal also claimed singles victories. Bierich defeated Timon Reichelt 6-3, 7-5, at the No. 1 spot and Haal defeated Span 6-3, 1-6, 6-2, at No. 3 singles.
Iowa will host Western Michigan Sunday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. The match is scheduled to begin at noon. Admission is free.
