Iowa Moves Up Leaderboard In Day Three

March 22, 2009

STATESBORO, GA – The University of Iowa men’s golf team finished the third and final round of the 18-team EZ-GO Schenkel Invitational in 14th place on Sunday. South Carolina won the 30th annual invitational by two strokes with a 54-hole total of 865 (+1).

The Hawkeyes were led by sophomore Brad Hopfinger, who shot each of his last two rounds 1-under par to finish tied for 11th place with a score of 216 (E). Freshman Brad George and sophomore Vince India were tied throughout most of the weekend and both finished in 11th place after shooting 225 (+9). Senior Cole Peevler recorded a 227 (+11) as he finished in a tie for 68th place. After posting a score of 232 (+16), freshman Barrett Kelpin finished tied for 84th.

Head Coach Mark Hankins was happy with his team’s improvement throughout the weekend, but knows that there is room to grow.

“We did a really great job of being resilient today and it showed up in our improved scores,” Hankins said. “Obviously we’re disappointed with our finish, but hopefully we’ll learn from our mistakes and get them corrected.”

The Hawkeyes will see competition again at the Spring Break Championship in Boca Raton, FL on March 27-29.
