IOWA CITY, IA – – The University of Iowa field hockey team has added another member to its 2009 recruiting class. Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum announced that Jessica Barnett has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Iowa in the fall.
“We are so excited to add an eighth member to this already outstanding freshman class,” said Griesbaum. “Jessica is a phenomenal three-sport athlete. She is an unbelievable competitor, and her outstanding athleticism will be a great asset to our backfield next year.”
Barnett, a defender, is a native of North Vancouver, Canada. Barnett was a three-sport athlete at Handsworth Secondary School, excelling in field hockey, basketball and soccer. From 2004-07, Barnett was her high school’s athlete of the year. In 2007 and 2008, she was a member of the British Columbia Provincial field hockey team. Barnett was named a first team senior girls field hockey all-star in 2008 and 2009. In 2008, she was a member of the team that finished second at the Junior National Field Hockey Championships.
In addition, she was a member of the 2009 British Columbia Provincial basketball championship team and was named the most outstanding defensive player of the 2009 British Columbia AAA Provincial basketball championship. Barnett was also a first team senior girls soccer all-star in 2008.
Barnett will join an already stellar class that includes Kelsey Boyce, Hailey Chadbourne, Grace Dolfi, Sarah Drake, Geena Lesiak, Sarah Pedrick and Kathleen McGraw. These recruits will join a team that finished 18-5, won its third-straight Big Ten Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA semifinals before falling to eventual national champion Maryland in double overtime.
