Iowa Women's Tennis Excels In The Classroom

Aug. 28, 2009

The University of Iowa women’s tennis team takes care of business, not only on the court, but in the classroom as well. Five of the team’s eight student-athletes were named academic all-Big Ten for their efforts in the 2008-09 academic school year.

To be eligible for academic all-Big Ten, the student must hold a career GPA of 3.0 or higher, they must be in at least their second year at the university and they must also be a letterwinner. Jennifer Barnes, Merel Beelen, Alexis Dorr, Kelcie Klockenga, and Lynne Poggensee-Wei all boast a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and are letterwinners on the tennis team.

Three of the athletes received the Distinguished Scholar Award, which requires the student to be at least in their second year at the university and have a 3.7 GPA or higher for the previous academic year. The athlete must also be a letterwinner. Barnes, Beelan and Poggensee-Wei all met this requirement in the 2008-09 school year.

One Hawkeye continued above and beyond the 3.7, and held a 4.0. Barnes graduated last year with a perfect 4.0 GPA in her final semester at the University of Iowa. The Bettendorf, IA native, was a two year letterwinner on Head Coach Daryl Greenan’s team.
