IOWA CITY, IA – – The University of Iowa field hockey team, ranked ninth nationally, was edged by No. 2 Wake Forest Saturday in the regular season opener, 3-2.
“I felt really good about how we started the game,” said Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum. “We put them under pressure. We had some really good pockets of play but it just was not all there. We need to learn from every opportunity and we need to take what we learned and apply it to tomorrow.”
The Hawkeyes struck first as Sarah Pergine scored off a rebound in the 17th minute of play. Wake Forest answered two minutes later in the 19th minute. Hilary Moore scored on a breakaway to tie the game at one. The score remained even at halftime, 1-1.
The Demon Deacons took a 2-1 lead in the 43rd minute of play. Lauren Greenwald and Raisa Schiller found Kim Romansky on a corner. The Black and Gold tied the match two minutes later. Freshman Geena Lesiak scored her first career goal in the 49th minute from 15 yards out.
In the 59th minute, Wake Forest scored the game winner off a penalty corner. Aileen Davis chipped in from close range to win the match for the Demon Deacons, 3-2.
The Hawkeyes will face 2007 National Champion and fourth-ranked North Carolina Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at Grant Field. Admission is free to the public.
