AMHERST, MA – – The ninth-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team defeated Boston University, 3-1, Sunday in Amherst, MA. The Hawkeyes move to 1-3 on the season with the victory.

“Sarah (Drake) played really well,” said Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum. “Tricia (Dean), Jess (Werley), Meghan (Beamesderfer) and Jessica (Barnett) did a great job defensively. We are happy to get a win and that should give us some momentum and confidence heading into next weekend.”

The Black and Gold struck first at the three minute mark. Senior Jess Werley chipped in a goal off a rebound to make the score 1-0 in favor of Iowa. The stingy Hawkeye defense did not allow a first half shot and the half would end with Iowa leading 1-0.

Moments into the second half the Hawkeyes extended their lead. Freshman Sarah Drake, fresh off her two-goal performance on Saturday, scored her team-leading third goal at the 36:56 mark. Senior Meghan Beamesderfer was credited with the assist.

Minutes later, senior Tricia Dean scored on an assist from Drake to extend the Iowa lead to 3-0. Boston added a goal in the 57th minute as Allie Dolce scored off a rebound, making the score 3-1. The Hawkeye defense held the Terriers the rest of the way to secure the victory.

The Hawkeyes return to Iowa City to face Virginia Commonwealth Friday. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Grant Field. Admission is free.
