The University of Iowa women’s tennis team competed Friday night in the Gopher Invitational. The Hawkeyes played very well in the opening day, and finished with 9-4, with five wins in the doubles competition and four in singles.
Four of Iowa’s seven singles competitors advanced to the second round after combining for four wins. Sophomore Sonja Molnar defeated Diana Popescu of Buffalo, 7-6, 6-2, Lynne Poggensee-Wei downed Magdalena Wiecha of Minnesota, 6-4, 6-2. Jessica Young recorded a win over Laia Gonzalez of Northern Iowa, 6-4, 6-4 and Alexis Dorr defeated Kira Golenko of Buffalo 6-2. 6-3.
Two duos are competing against in each other in the finals match of the second flight, while Molnar and Merel Beelen are vying for third place in the first flight. Beelen and Molnar defeated Kanade/Bex of Northern Iowa, while Young and Kelcie Klockenga defeated a duo from Iowa State. Poggensee-Wei and Chmelarova defeated Petrova/Markovic of Buffalo
“We had a really good start today with nine wins against some strong competition. Our doubles matches were really impressive, and we did good things on the court in our singles matches as well,” Head Coach Daryl Greenan said. “I’m very impressed with our level of play today, and overall the level we are at is very high which helped us get things done in a positive way.”
Iowa will open play Saturday morning at 10 a.m. Results will be available on hawkeyesports.com following the completion of the day’s matches.
