The University of Iowa women’s tennis team finished the Gopher Invite with a 7-2 record Sunday. The Hawkeyes raked in 24 wins total in the three-day fall event.
The doubles duo of Jessica Young and Kelcie Klockenga were crowned champions of the Swarm doubles flight after they defeated fellow teammates Lynne Poggensee-Wei and Zuzana Chmelarova, 8-6. Sonja Molnar and Merel Beelen took third place in the Timberwolves doubles flight by defeating Karonis/Chartier of Iowa State, 8-1.
“We had a strong showing this weekend. Our doubles were very impressive, recording seven wins against high quality opponents,” Head Coach Daryl Greenan said. “Singles results were equally encouraging with five of our seven players going 3-1 on the weekend. Overall it was a great start to our season.”
Chmelarova also defeated Xu Chang of Eastern Michigan, 6-2, 6-3 in the consolation championships. Molnar defeated Homlberg of Nebraska 6-0, 6-1. Iowa’s Alexis Dorr fell in the championship match to Alexa Palen of Minnesota, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. Klockenga took the consolation title by defeating Laia Gonzalez of UNI, 6-4, 6-4. Young and Beelen also recorded singles victories Sunday. Young defeated Adi Petrova of Buffalo, 6-3, 6-1, and Beelen notched a win against Alix Bex of UNI, 6-1, 6-2.
Iowa’s next competition is the Seminole Invite Oct. 16-18 in Tallahassee, FL.
