MANAKIN-SABOT, VA – The University of Iowa men’s golf team is tied for seventh with Penn State after the first two rounds of the VCU Shootout Monday. The Hawkeyes began the day with a first round 297 (+9), but responded with a 291 (+3) second round to bring their 36-hole total to 588 (+12). UNC-Wilmington is leading the 14-team field with a score of 571 (-5). Competition is being held on the 6,955-yard Manakin Course at the Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, VA.
Brad Hopfinger is tied for 15th after two rounds with a score of 144 (E). The junior fired seven birdies and is leading the Hawkeyes. Sophomore Chris Brant finished the day in a tie for 29th after carding a score of 148 (+4). Barrett Kelpin is tied for 40th after picking up six birdies Monday. The sophomore finished two rounds with a score of 149 (+5). Junior Vince India also fired six birdies on his way to a 36-hole total of 151 (+7) and a tie for 47th. Additionally, Brad George is tied for 54th. The sophomore recorded five birdies and is eight-over-par after two rounds with a score of 152.
“Everyone played decent but nobody took it low,” said Head Coach Mark Hankins. “We need to continue to stay disciplined and make good decisions and we’ll shoot better numbers. We’re going to stick to our game plan and hopefully we can learn from our mistakes and take advantage of our course knowledge.”
